Abdul Khan Steps into the Spotlight as He Aims to Break Free from Amir's Shadow

Abdul Khan prepares for a pivotal match against Liam Fitzmaurice at Wembley this Saturday, marking a significant moment for British South Asian boxing. The event features unbeaten light-welterweight Adam Azim and showcases prospects like Mohammad Bilal Ali, Vijayraj Karia, and Saqib Mehmood, with five South Asian fighters sharing the spotlight. Having grown up in the shadow of his cousin, Olympic silver medalist Amir Khan, Abdul reflects on how Amir’s success ignited his passion for boxing. "Seeing Amir reach the heights of the sport only lit the fire in probably the majority of the South Asian kids out there, including me," Abdul stated, emphasizing the inspiration he drew from Amir's achievements. At just 23 years old, Abdul holds an unbeaten record of 14 professional fights with three knockouts. He acknowledges that his surname has aided his career but insists on carving his own identity. "It's been my own hard work and dedication which has kept those doors open," he asserts, expressing his desire to step out from Amir's shadow. Abdul's journey has not been without challenges; he became the man of his house at age 10 after his parents separated. Boxing provided him with an escape and a sense of purpose. He recalls, "This is why I stuck at it. It gave me purpose, motivation, and more than anything, it gave me a home." As he looks to establish himself in the boxing world, Abdul remains grateful for Amir’s guidance, stating, "He was always a phone call away. Whatever advice I needed, he was always there." Now, he aims to make a name for himself and prove his worth in the ring.
