Allegations Mount Against Red Star Lionesses Owner Over £28,000 Fraud Claims

Parents of players at the Red Star Lionesses football club have accused owner James (Jamie) Austin of misappropriating over £28,000 intended for tournaments, kits, and training sessions that never occurred. The allegations, made by more than 70 parents, are currently under investigation by Greater Manchester Police and the Football Association (FA), which has suspended Austin pending the outcome. Austin, who has a criminal history including two fraud convictions, denies the claims, asserting they are civil disputes. He reportedly charged parents around £8,500 for entry, travel, and accommodation to the Paris International Cup in July, but tournament organizers confirmed he only secured an entry-only package for two teams and failed to book accommodations. Parents have voiced their distress: One parent stated, "My daughter is deeply upset... it feels like a cruel deception." Another criticized the broader failures in the girls' football system, calling for immediate changes. Reports indicate that Austin has been charged by the FA with breaching Rule E3.1 for bringing the game into disrepute. The Red Star Lionesses have also been suspended for not complying with FA regulations regarding welfare officers. Parents attracted to the club due to its vibrant social media presence and promises of high-level opportunities have expressed frustration over unmet expectations. For instance, Austin charged £275 per player for a tournament at Manchester City's Etihad Stadium, which was never scheduled, and £20 for a free-entry event organized by the Celtic FC Foundation. Despite claims of £6,000 in recent refunds, parents report not receiving any direct reimbursements. In a voice message, Austin admitted to struggling financially and acknowledged his failures over the past months. Austin’s history includes previous fraud convictions, raising concerns about his credibility. He claims to have reformed, stating he has led a law-abiding life for the past 15 years.
