Shock and Disappointment as Harry Maguire Misses Out on World Cup Selection

England's national team boss Thomas Tuchel is set to announce a surprising World Cup squad on Friday, with notable omissions including Harry Maguire, Phil Foden, and Cole Palmer. The announcement, expected around 10am, follows Tuchel’s calls to various players the day before. Maguire, who expressed his feelings on social media, stated he felt "shocked and gutted" after believing he could contribute significantly this summer. He emphasized his pride in representing his country and wished his teammates well for the tournament. His Manchester United teammate Luke Shaw also finds himself excluded from the squad, a decision that aligns with Tuchel’s selections since taking over. Other players likely to miss out include: Morgan Gibbs-White Trent Alexander-Arnold Lewis Hall However, Kobbie Mainoo is expected to be included, alongside Noni Madueke, Ollie Watkins, and the surprising choice of Ivan Toney. Watkins has been in exceptional form for Aston Villa, while Toney has made a brief appearance under Tuchel but hasn’t been selected since last June. The squad’s finalization raises questions, particularly regarding the fitness of players like Tino Livramento and Levi Colwill, who is returning from significant injury. John Stones is also under scrutiny as Tuchel acknowledged his past contributions despite limited playtime. The Football Association must submit the final 26-man squad to FIFA by May 31, with the possibility of last-minute changes due to medical reasons until June 16. Brighton's Jason Steele is set to accompany the squad as a training goalkeeper, filling a role previously held by Tom Heaton at Euro 2024.
