Ian Poulter Faces Surgery After Meniscus Tear from Hopping Up Steps

Ian Poulter revealed that he needs surgery after suffering a meniscus tear while "hopping up two steps" at a LIV Golf event in Virginia earlier this month. Despite the injury to his knee cartilage, the 50-year-old managed to perform admirably, shooting a four-under 66 in the first round of LIV Golf Korea at Asiad Country Club. In the second round, Poulter recorded a two-over 72, placing him tied for 13th, six shots behind the American leader Talor Gooch. Poulter explained, "I tore my meniscus Thursday just hopping up two steps, so went for an MRI when I got back from Virginia, and I'm going to have to have surgery in September." He expressed uncertainty about competing in Korea but noted that walking was more painful than playing. "Bizarrely I have no sensation throughout the golf swing that there's anything wrong with it," he stated, adding that he feels discomfort when walking downhill. Poulter emphasized the need to strengthen his leg while avoiding activities that could exacerbate his condition, saying, "I just have to be reminding myself that I can't go and play padel, tennis or do anything stupid." Since joining LIV Golf in 2022, Poulter has yet to win an individual event, despite boasting 17 professional wins, including three on the PGA Tour. He is not alone in experiencing unexpected injuries; Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy have also faced similar setbacks due to freak accidents.
