Jens Berthel Askou Moves to Toulouse After Successful Season with Motherwell

Jens Berthel Askou has departed from Motherwell following a standout debut season, now taking the managerial role at Toulouse in France. Under Askou's guidance, Motherwell achieved a commendable fourth-place finish in the Premiership, culminating in a crucial victory against Hibernian last Saturday, which secured European football for the next season. The 43-year-old, who succeeded Michael Wimmer last summer, received accolades for his attractive and effective style of play, which had the Steelmen briefly contesting for the league title. His leadership saw Motherwell set defensive club records, attracting attention from other clubs, including Celtic. In his statement, Askou expressed gratitude for his time at Motherwell, stating, "Grateful is the best word to describe how I feel about my time as a manager of Motherwell FC." He reflected on the season's journey, emphasizing the invaluable support from players, staff, and fans. He noted: "Special opportunities come rare in football. Sometimes you have to leave great things behind to create new ones, no matter how hard it is." Kyrk Macmillan, the club chairman, wished Askou well and acknowledged the understanding that success would lead to opportunities for progression. He remarked on the exciting future for Motherwell, with over 20 contracted first-team players and a 40% increase in crowds at Fir Park. Before joining Motherwell, Askou served as an assistant at Copenhagen and Sparta Prague, with managerial roles in Sweden, the Faroe Islands, and Denmark. Toulouse sought a new manager following the departure of Carles Martinez Novell after the season.
