Joe Burrow's Year-Long Quest for an International Game Finally Pays Off

The Cincinnati Bengals are set to make their international debut in Spain against the Atlanta Falcons, much to the delight of quarterback Joe Burrow. Since joining the NFL in 2020, Burrow had hoped to play abroad, expressing disappointment when the Bengals were not included in last year's international schedule. In February 2025, the NFL announced that the Miami Dolphins would play the first-ever game in Madrid, sparking rumors of a matchup against the Bengals. Burrow shared his eagerness on Instagram, stating, "Please be true," but the Dolphins ultimately faced the Washington Commanders instead. After the disappointment, Burrow openly requested an international game for the following year, a rare move for an NFL player. He aimed to help grow the sport internationally, referencing his involvement in Netflix's "Quarterback" show as part of this effort. The Bengals, along with the Dallas Cowboys, Detroit Lions, Houston Texans, and Las Vegas Raiders, had not played abroad this decade, highlighting Burrow's frustration. The NFL took notice of Burrow's vocal disappointment. In an April interview, Mike North, the NFL's vice president of broadcast planning, acknowledged Burrow's sentiments, indicating that the Bengals would likely get an international game in 2026. North credited Burrow's popularity as a significant reason for the Bengals' selection to play in Europe. Upon learning about the upcoming game, Burrow expressed enthusiasm, believing the Bengals could help expand the NFL's global reach, similar to how the Chicago Bulls elevated basketball's popularity. He also requested the team travel to Spain early to acclimate and bond. Bengals head coach Zac Taylor echoed Burrow's excitement, emphasizing the opportunity to promote the Bengals brand internationally. As the team prepares for their third international game, they aim to secure their first win abroad, having previously gone 0-1-1 in international play.
