Second-Year NFL Players Set for Breakout: Giants' Carter and Raiders' Jeanty Lead the Charge

The average NFL career lasts just under four seasons, compelling teams to see early signs of growth in their drafted players. With many expecting significant contributions in their second year, five second-year players are primed for a breakout in the 2026 season. New York Giants EDGE Abdul Carter is on the cusp of stardom after a promising rookie season. Selected as the third overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, Carter recorded 66 quarterback pressures, ranking 12th in the league. However, he converted only four of those pressures into sacks, placing him 211th among players with similar opportunities. With a full season under his belt and playing alongside established talents like Brian Burns, Carter aims to elevate his game. Las Vegas Raiders RB Ashton Jeanty, the sixth overall pick in 2025, led all rookies with 975 rushing yards. Yet, his 3.7 yards per carry were the lowest for a rookie with over 250 carries since 2012. With new coaching under Klint Kubiak and potential upgrades at quarterback with Fernando Mendoza or Kirk Cousins, Jeanty hopes to improve his efficiency. Carolina Panthers WR Tetairoa McMillan dazzled in his rookie year, leading all rookies in receiving yards (1,014) and touchdowns (7). Despite his success, McMillan aims to break the 2.0 yards per route run threshold to enhance his All-Pro candidacy. Los Angeles Chargers RB Omarion Hampton showed flashes of brilliance before a fractured ankle curtailed his progress. With both starting tackles returning and a new offensive scheme under Mike McDaniel, Hampton is set for a significant second season. Finally, Jacksonville Jaguars WR/CB Travis Hunter, the second overall pick, faced challenges in his rookie year due to an LCL tear. Despite limited action, he made history with 298 receiving yards and 15 tackles. As he transitions to a more defined role, Hunter is expected to shine in 2026.
