Oliynykova Calls for Sanctions Against Shnaider Over Controversial Exhibition Participation

Oleksandra Oliynykova has voiced strong criticism against Diana Shnaider, calling for sanctions following Shnaider's participation in a Gazprom-funded exhibition in Russia. After her defeat to a Russian opponent with a score of 7-5, 6-1, Oliynykova condemned the hypocrisy of the sport’s governing bodies. Oliynykova stated, “She doesn’t want to comment on the war... I want to stop the tour being so hypocritical.” She emphasized the need for action against athletes participating in events sponsored by companies linked to war crimes, questioning why sanctions aren't applied similarly to tournaments organized by such sponsors. During a press conference, she presented evidence of Shnaider's involvement in the Northern Palmyra Trophies, which is sponsored by Gazprom, and noted Shnaider's social media activity, including liking posts supportive of Vladimir Putin. Oliynykova compared playing in the Gazprom tournament to competing in Nazi Germany, stating, “There is no difference for me.” She expressed her frustration over the silence surrounding Shnaider's actions and the glorification of Russia in such events. In response, Shnaider claimed she was unaware of Oliynykova's comments and defended her participation, stating, “I see it as an opportunity just to show some good tennis for my family.” Oliynykova, who has emerged as a prominent voice regarding the war in Ukraine, lives and trains in Kyiv. She highlighted the personal stakes involved, saying, “If I am going to be silent... my life would be destroyed.” She concluded her press conference by underscoring the importance of standing against evil, stating, “A real role model has the courage to stand against evil.” Her remarks reflect a deep commitment to her homeland and the ongoing conflict.
